This Haida carving features animalistic forms in the design carved from shale, a finely grained rock found in the Queen Charlotte Islands. The pipe was made as a souvenir to sell to tourists and it is unlikely the imagery has any religious or mythological meanings, although the carvings are similar to those found on ceremonial items.
