Explore Native America event featured in KM Maidstone
Explore Native America with the Brenchley Collection at Maidstone Museum on 1st June 2013 was a great success!
Organised and sponsored by Canterbury Christ Church University, the museum event showcased how the Brenchley Collection project and Canterbury Christ Church University’s research is important, and of benefit, to the Maidstone Community. The project aims to teach Maidstone’s community, from children to adults, about Maidstone-born, 19th Century explorer, Julius Brenchley and the fascinating objects he collected. The event, predominantly aimed at children and families, saw all enjoy making Totem Poles and understanding the meanings of animals which are traditionally carved onto them. The storytelling session told the story ‘How Raven Stole the Sun’ written by Maria Williams who is a Tlingit tribal member. The session involved Raven retelling the story of how he let the sun into the world, and featured the sun’s release in an interactive way!
